The elevator is also one of the fastest. It moves at a speed of as much as 10 floors per second, making it possible to reach the observation deck, which is located on the 124th floor of the building, in just one minute.

East Asia’s tallest building officially opened in 2022. Merdeka 118 took eight years to construct. The design of the building refers to the diverse and rich culture of Malaysia and its people. The design itself is a direct reference to the statue of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the father of Malaysian independence and the country’s first prime minister. In 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman uttered the word “merdeka,” which means “independence” in the Malay language, seven times. The shape of the Merdeka 118 building was created in part of the pose adopted by the politician at the time.

Merdeka 118 is the first building in Malaysia to be awarded a triple platinum rating under global sustainability certifications. Despite its original design and patriotic references, the building faced criticism from Malaysians, who considered it a waste of public money.

Shanghai Tower

This one of the tallest buildings in China houses office space, hotels and shopping malls. On the 116th floor is the Free Sky observation deck, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the city. The building’s name refers to the Ping An Insurance company, which has its headquarters here.

The tower’s stainless steel facade alone weighs as much as 1,700 tons. It is this material that is primarily responsible for the building’s unique appearance. Ping An International Finance Center has a width to height ratio of 1:10. The entire building is as much as 495,520 square meters of floor space.

Lotte World Tower

Location: Seoul, South Korea

South Korea’s tallest building was 13 years in the making. It was only in 2016, at the completion of construction, that a giant “2016” sign made of LED pixels was successfully displayed on its facade. The official opening took place on April 3, 2017.

Guangzhou CTF Finance Center

The Guangzhou CTF Financial Center consists of a skyscraper and an eight-story podium. The podium features a 30-meter-high atrium topped by a glass roof. It has eight concrete mega-columns.

The mega-columns were designed to meet Chinese seismic standards and prevent damage from earthquakes.
